Gnosticism is one of the first and most influential heresies in the history of Christianity.

Gnosticism was not one particular belief; rather, it was a broad range of beliefs. It is often compared to mystery religions of the ancient world and esoteric Christianity, which held that there was a "mystery knowledge" that was available to initiates, as opposed to the general knowledge revealed in the Gospels and other books of the New Testament.

The Apostles' Creed has been described as a direct refutation of Gnosticism.

An early Gnostic heretic was Valentinus (no relation to St. Valentine)

Original texts of the gnostics can be found throughout the Internet. A couple places to start would be Gnostic Teachings, The Nag Hammadi Library, the Internet Sacred Text Archive (a personal favorite).

Gnosticism has been described as the secret Christianity that the early Christian Fathers did not want you to know about. The original texts make for facinating reading.

One important concept in Gnosticism is the demiurge.
