Admit it.

We all have a list of books that we'll tackle "some day." Well . . . some day is here.

Difficult Books is a community of readers who believe reading is a conversation. Become a member and help us make it a two-way conversation.

user warning: in /home/kurtlin4/public_html/difficultbooks.com/includes/cache.inc on line 109.

How This Site Works

One main goal of Difficult Books is to build a community around reading some of these intimidating books. So, to make this community happen, this website allows any visitor to sign in and begin contributing to the pages.

Two types of contributed content is available: book pages and link contributed pages. I want to limit "book pages" to those of us who want to post complete text of public domain works. But the "link contributed pages" can be pretty much anything.

Examples can be seen from the pages as I post them. Sometimes the link is to a wikipedia article or other outside site, and sometimes it links to an internal page. Here's how you do it.

Instructions

1. Log in or create an account.
2. Click on "create content" and choose link contributed page (unless you're feeling ambitious and want to begin posting Critique of Pure Reason).
3. When it opens, begin writing your content.
4. Go to the bottom of the page and click "save."

There you go. You've created a web page.

How can I link it to other content?

1. When you "save" your content page, you will see the "finished page" as it will appear to other readers.
2. If you look at the address box at the top of your browser, you see that your page has been assigned a URL.
3. Highlight that address and "copy" it.
4. Go to the page into which you want to post the new link.
5. Click "edit" and scroll down to the spot where you want to insert the link.
6. Type in the HTML code for links.
7. Click "save" and you've made a link.

That begs the question, "What do you mean by 'HTML code for links'?"

This is the only HTML code you will need to start

<a href="http://webaddress.com">hyperlinked phrase</a>

1. Type the following: <a href=" ">
2. Insert your URL between the quotation marks, including the HTTP://
3. After the last bracket (>), type the word that you want to appear as hyperlinked on the page.
4. After that word, type in the following: </a>

For instance, if you wanted the word "home" to hyperlink to this site's homepage, you would write the following code:

<a href="http://www.difficultbooks.com">home</a>

Clear as mud? Now, if I ever get any visitors, I'll be happy to help them create links.

The point of this website is collaborative reading, where every member contributes their knowledge and understanding to the text. This site will only work if people are willing to spend some time here and join the party.

Don't be shy. We're all beginners here.
