Liliata rutilantium te confessorum turma circumdet: iubilantium te virginum chorus excipiat is a Latin phrase spoken during the Recommendation of a Soul Departing (Ordo Commendationis Animae). This is the traditional Roman Catholic prayer that a priest says over a dying person.

It means "May the crowd of joyful confessors encompass thee; may the choir of blessed virgins go before thee."

The phrase appears in James Joyce's Ulysses: page 11 and page 23 .

Remark

It is important to know that this phrase is not of Joyce's authorship, but a Roman Catholic prayer. Although this phrase is very popular due to his appearance in the context of Joyce's novel (Ulises), we must remember that Joyce just took it from the Ordo Recommendationis Animae.
