Valentine

Early in Ulysses, Stephen begins to ruminate about the history of the Roman Catholic Church and the heretics that were so instrumental in the development of its theology.

The third he mentions is "Valentine, spurning Christ's terrene body."

Valentine, or Valentinus as he's usually called, was an early heresiarch that preached Gnosticism.

The Catholic perspective can be found here.

This Valeninus is no relation to St. Valentine.
